In 1950, Stanley Schoenbaum became one of the first graduates of the Masters’ program in taxation at New York University School of Law. After serving in the Office of the Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service as a trial attorney in the Atlanta District and as a special attorney in the Legislation and Regulations Division of the IRS National Office in Washington, D.C., Mr. Schoenbaum moved to San Antonio in 1958 to begin the private practice of law specializing in tax matters.

Mr. Schoenbaum was joined by R. James Curphy (who had served as a trial attorney in the IRS District Counsel’s Office in Houston) and Bill Scanlan (who had a Masters in taxation from George Washington University Law School) to form the law firm of Schoenbaum, Curphy & Scanlan in 1974.
